Ian Whalen

Born in Washington, DC, Ian studied ballet at the Kirov Academy, under the instruction of Anatoli Kucheruk, before joining the Vienna State Ballet in 2005.
In 2008, Ian joined Aaron Watkin's Semperoper Ballet and has had the opportunity to work with choreographers such as, David Dawson, William Forsythe, Jiří Kylián and Mats Ek.
Since 2009, Ian has been the resident photographer for the Semperoper Ballet and has collaborated on crafting an ongoing image campaign for the ballet.
In 2013, the Ballettbroschüre der Spielzeit 12/13 produced by Fons Hickmann m23, was the winner of the Type Directors Club of New York award.
As a visual artist, Ian's work includes interactive performances, mixed media theater, gallery installations and film projects.
